Using What You Have
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”1 Peter 4:10 This past Sunday was a special worship service for our church as we ordained a new deacon and recognized four more previously ordained who are returning to service as deacons. As we ordained Anna Hunt as a new deacon, she offered an incredible response to accepting this ministry role in our church. She asked the question,…
Uncertainty
“God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM…”Exodus 3:14 On Sunday, we looked at God’s relentless love through the Passover in the book of Exodus. One of the passages that leads up to that moment is God calling Moses to go to Egypt and confront Pharaoh. You can read the full story starting in Exodus 3. Moses’ burning bush experience is one we all remember reading about. What a moment for him… to hear from God and be invited to…
Reconciliation
“But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.”Genesis 33:4 The Fox and the Hound (1981) is one of Disney’s most underrated yet profound stories about love, loyalty, and reconciliation. Though it’s about forest animals and hunting dogs, it’s deeply human at its heart. The movie tells the story of Tod, a young fox, and Copper, a hound dog. As young animals, they become best friends—inseparable playmates who promise to…
Same God
You’re the same GodYou’re with me in the middle of it all, GodYou’re catching every tear as it fallsI know You’ll never changeEven when I’m feeling far away Hannah Kerr – Same God On Sunday, Nicole sang Hannah Kerr’s Same God, and we talked about Hagar and Ishmael in the midst of our Relentless Love Series. I’ve been thinking about the lyrics of that song over the weekend and again this morning. Over the past several years, our church has been on mission…
Two Visual Aids
On Sunday, I told the story of Ferdinand Cheval. I realized something as I was sharing his story: I should have provided a visual aid. The good news is that the newsletter provides a great place to correct that simple oversight. Ferdinand Cheval was a rural postman in France in the late 1800s. One day on his long mail route, he tripped over a strangely shaped stone. He picked it up, admired it, and suddenly remembered a dream he’d had…
Relentless
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”Jeremiah 31:3 Pets can be great teachers. If nothing else, they can provide ministers with lots of examples and stories they can use in sermons and Bible lessons—just ask Nicole. In the picture above, there are two dogs. The dog on the left is our dog, Waffles. The dog on the right is Fendt, and he belongs to the Forrest family, who also happen to be members of PBSC.…
Two Gifts – Work and Rest
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”Genesis 2:15 This Monday, September 1, our nation celebrates Labor Day. Labor Day began during America’s industrial boom in the late 1800s as part of the labor movement’s push for better working conditions, shorter hours, and fair pay. The first celebration took place in New York City on September 5, 1882. States began adopting the holiday soon after, and in 1894,…
Generosity
I have always been amazed at the life story of Francis Chan. Chan’s story is one of the most striking modern Christian examples of generosity. He was the founding pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California. Through his bestselling book Crazy Love (2008), Chan became a well-known author and event speaker. His book called Christians to radical devotion and sacrificial living. He then lived out what he preached in a very visible way. As Cornerstone grew into a megachurch of…
Generosity
I have a friend named Matt Blair who lives in Alabama and serves as a pastor of a church. In the mid-2000s, we both lived on Oak Island and hung out as 20-year-olds trying to figure out adulthood. Matt was the worship leader at Generations Church where I attended when I worked at Caswell. In the summer of 2006, I had just bought a new truck—the same white Chevy Silverado that my son Luke now drives—and was excited to show…
Ministry Opportunity
This past Sunday was our annual Summer Recap Sunday. We had the opportunity to worship together and hear from children, youth, and adults about their experiences this summer. It was a great day to be at PSBC. God has definitely been moving in the life of our church. I believe it’s more important that we grow and mature in our faith as a community of believers– even more so than growing in our attendance. However, I do want to be sure…
