Memes have become a popular way to communicate and share humor with friends. For those of you who are not tech savvy people, a meme is typically a picture with a humorous caption that is shared through text message or social media. Some of you may have seen a meme like this Public-School Teacher example.
This morning, I was reminded of these memes. Over the next three nights, we will welcome nearly 60 (60!!!!) kids to PSBC for our annual VBS. Church events like VBS don’t just happen. It takes weeks of planning and preparation; and then, days of decorating. On Sunday, some of you saw the FLC small dining room begin to transform into the big top circus tent that will host our large group sessions. This morning your church staff gathered to finish up several things. As we blew up games and beach balls, we laughed thinking about making our own ministry meme. “What I really do is blow up beach balls for VBS…”

I imagine that in your day job or just your daily life that there are things that don’t live up to the imagination of others. Maybe it’s what happens around your office, the simple joys of keeping the grandkids, or what you must do to function your crazy household on a weekly basis. Whatever would fill the last block of your “what I really do” meme, there is a great purpose to it. It can give new meaning to what the Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Your ministry may not look like anyone else thinks it does. It may not look like what you imagined it would be. But make no mistake. God has you there, for that season, for that moment, for this time.
Let it be our prayer that we take advantage of each and every ministry opportunity that we have in our lives and work at it for the Lord. Even if it is simple, like blowing up a beach ball. There’s no waste at the altar.
Prayer: God, thank you all the ways you give us to minister, even the ones we often think of as just a simple part of our day. In Jesus’ holy name we pray, Amen.
