When I was taking my oldest son Luke to school, we were talking about the chance of rain for today. We went back and forth over the hourly forecast vs. the forecast in general. His phone app said there was only a 45% chance at one moment while my app said there was a 90% chance of rain for the day. So which is it? 45% chance at one moment or 90% chance all day?
The truth is neither one of us was right. With a little light research, I learned something about the forecast and percentage of precipitation today:
“The equation for the “Probability of Precipitation” is “C x A.” “C” represents the confidence of precipitation occurring in the area, and “A” represents the percent of the area forecasted to receive precipitation. Confidence multiplied by the percentage of the area forecasted equals the percentage of precipitation.”
So if the weather people are 100% confident that 30% of a given area will see rain, then it’s a 30% chance for that area. If that all reads like a foreign language to you, here’s my rough summary…it’s an educated guess. Looking at all the factors, they guess what percentage of an area will get rain.
All that weather talk made me think about the sovereignty of God. Job gets a reminder from God in Job chapter 38 that God is in charge of the storehouses of snow and the starting point for lightning. I can barely understand the formula of those who study weather for a living, but God knows when the rain is going to fall. Where does that leave us? In a humble place of trusting the Lord. May that be our prayer today. God, you know if it’s going to rain. Help me to trust you with more than just the weather. Amen.
