Before my Grandpa passed away in 2022, I would visit him and my Grandma in Raleigh when my work for Gardner-Webb would take me through or around that area. I always enjoyed eating a meal or spending the night with them. On one such trip, I was enjoying breakfast with them at their favorite diner around the corner from their house in North Raleigh. As the conversation flowed over coffee and a good meal, I asked my Grandma how they were getting along. It was more than a “how are you?” kind of question. I really wanted to know how she in her late 80s and Grandpa at age 90 were doing as they still lived independently. She chuckled and replied, “It takes us all day to get nothing done.”
I laughed out loud when she said it, but later wrote that phrase down. I knew that was a gem. I thought about my Grandma’s phrase in the wake of Sunday’s message. In John 21, we see the resurrected Jesus cooking breakfast by the lake for seven of the remaining disciples. Nothing fancy. No grand miracles taking place. Just the image of our Savior meeting people where they are.
The reality is that most of our days after Easter might be normal, or even boring. The list of all the things that you have to accomplish is always there. There is always a new something to tackle, a new change to the schedule. But there is rarely miracle after miracle after big event after big event.
Here’s the good news: Jesus, the Resurrected Lord, meets us in the day-to-day of this life; the happy, the sad, the mundane, the boring…it’s not just the miracles and the resurrection. He’s there at breakfast, on a Tuesday…
So let’s sit down and eat with Him. We are Easter People and Praise the Lord is our song. Even when we take all day to get nothing done, Jesus walks with us.
Prayer: God, we are humbled by the resurrection of Your Son, Jesus. Give us the strength to live as Easter people. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Grace and peace,
Aaron
