Service

This past weekend, my friend Brian Earley was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the Army. Brian joined the military at 17 years old as a member of the Army Reserves. He was deployed twice and his work flying helicopters propelled (see what I did there…) him to a career as a pilot for JetBlue, a commercial airline. We use words like “serve” and “service” when speaking about the military because of the great sacrifice those men and women make to defend our nation, protect our borders, and provide aid around the world.

This Sunday is Baptist Men’s Sunday. We will celebrate the many ministries of men in our church just as we did the many ministries of women on WMU Sunday in November. There are many opportunities to serve others through our church and countless ways to be involved in our community. As we talked about Sunday, God calls us to obedience. How is God calling you to serve in this new year? Is it here at our church? Is there a local ministry or mission that you know He is pointing you towards?

In 2024, we will have plenty of opportunities to serve…if we choose to do so. It’s not always going to be written in the stars how you are supposed to go about it. You have to be sensitive to the Spirit and listening. But rest assured, 2024 will be full of moments to serve God. Will we choose to serve? He is certainly worthy.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,

and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45
