Our Shield

Our Shield

Two weeks ago, Hurricane Debby made its way onto and up the east coast. Thursday of that week brought a lot of rain and some gusts of wind for our area. We were having a staff meeting that morning and heard Clyde Buckner in the hallway talking on the phone. All we heard was “yeah, there’s water in the sanctuary.” Fortunately, it was a small leak. Even better, a new roof was already on its way thanks to the good work of many in our church led by Ben Brooks.

On Monday of this week, workers began scurrying all over the roof of the Family Life Center and the Sanctuary working to replace those roofs. I looked out my office window to see two men traversing the steep pitch of our sanctuary as if they were walking through a flat field. I could only watch for a moment…my concern for them tripping on a rogue shingle wouldn’t let me look but for so long.

To state the obvious, your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. It provides protection for the interior, and it helps prevent damage from wind, rain, hail, snow, and other weather conditions. It helps to insulate your home, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Its job is protecting your home and family.

As we navigate the waters of life and all the elements that come with it, we are also in need of protection, a shield of sorts…

Psalm 28:6-7

Praise be to the Lord,

    for he has heard my cry for mercy.

The Lord is my strength and my shield;

    my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.

My heart leaps for joy,

    and with my song I praise him.

We often think of maintaining our roof or other aspects of our home to keep things inside safe and dry. When was the last time we made maintaining and protecting our spirit a priority? I mean a daily priority. Are we taking time to read a daily devotion or actually read and think about that daily email verse that we signed up for? God is our strength and shield. But the thing about a shield is, you have to remember to pick it up…  Let’s take time to do that this week.

Prayer: God, thank you for being our strength and shield. Help us to trust in you and the help you freely provide. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Grace and peace,

Aaron
