Yogi Berra, the great professional baseball catcher who later took on the roles of manager and coach, may likely be known more for his quotes, or “Yogi-isms,” than his baseball career. Last night, the Atlanta Braves came back to beat the Philadelphia Phillies in a wild and exciting baseball game. It reminded me of a Yogi-ism, “The game of baseball isn’t over until it’s over.”
Go watch the ending. It’s crazy. For those baseball fans in the room, it was the first 8-5-3 double play in MLB postseason history and the first double play ever involving an outfielder to end a postseason game. For those non-baseball people, you just need to know it was an incredible catch and then the Braves third baseman Austin Riley was in the perfect spot to complete the double play.
After the game, Riley said, “I think the only reason I was in the position was just momentum kept pulling me that way. And it ended up just being the right spot at the right time.”
There was something about Riley’s quote that stuck out to me. “Momentum just kept pulling me that way…it ended up just being the right spot at the right time.” I’m just over two months into being a pastor here at Poplar Springs. I’ve done some things well, and there are others that I’ve missed on. There have been highs and lows and lots of learning from Katherine and Nicole. All in all: It is the right spot at the right time. God’s timing is perfect, every time. I feel the momentum of our church moving.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” I’ve been simmering on that verse for some time now. I’m excited to see the next steps for our church.
Hope to see you Wednesday night!
Grace and peace,
