Serving

For the past two Sundays, we’ve talked about serving. What does it mean to serve? What does it mean for us to follow in the footsteps of the greatest servant, Jesus? This past Sunday, we had the privilege of honoring two members of our church for their great service to Poplar Springs—two with great character, but different gifts, talents, and callings.

Hugh Bess faithfully served our congregation and community as our church host for 20 years. I’m guessing here, but that equals roughly 700 church meals and events.

Let that sink in for a second…700 church events over 20 years. This doesn’t include extra time spent ordering food, cleaning, etc. Hugh has been a great example of a servant. He never asked for recognition, took his role seriously, and faithfully served our church with a smile. If you have ever enjoyed a Wednesday night meal or any other event in our Family Life Center, you have Hugh and his hospitality to thank for those experiences.

We also had the opportunity to officially name Rev. Andy Oliver as Poplar Springs’ first Pastor Emeritus. Andy and Kim faithfully served this church with Andy as our pastor for 11 years. Andy arrived at this church after a long and often difficult season. He ministered in his own unique way through his uncanny ability to build meaningful relationships across the age spectrum. Andy was truly a pastor. He

loved this congregation in a mighty way and continues to do so. Andy and Kim still serve as preschool workers and teachers. We are blessed to still have Andy and Kim in our congregation. This is their church home, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

We are fortunate to learn from examples like Hugh and Andy. They are men of great character, but different callings. One served as our host. One served as our pastor. Both served well.

God has gifted each and every one of us with special gifts and abilities. We have been gifted to serve. Now, it is our turn. Will you choose to serve?

Prayer: God, give us ears to hear your call and the strength to serve. We are grateful for so many in our church who choose to serve you in this place. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Grace and peace,

Aaron
