Someone mentioned to me that October (or is it November?) is Pastor Appreciation Month and that they just wanted to let me know I was appreciated. A word came to mind that I used to see written in red on my college English 101 essays back at good ol’ Clemson University. The red letters did not indicate that they were the words of Jesus. But instead they were the words of an overzealous professor looking for a reason to downgrade my thought-provoking piece of literature. The red let-ter word was scribbled with conviction… “superfluous.” For some time I thought my teacher was complementing me. I mean the word does contain the adjective “super.” Curiosity got the best of me so I decided to look it up and see how I had im-pressed my instructor and it was then that I learned that it meant…. “excessive and wordy.” I took that to mean that the masterpieces I was submitting were repetitive with unneeded sentences and phrases.
At Poplar Springs Baptist Church, an October or November Pastor Appreciation Month is ….. superfluous. I know this sounds harsh and ungracious but it is unneeded. This is a congregation that makes me feel appreciated from January through December and, therefore, a month dedicated to telling me I am appreciated is unnecessary.
Here are my suggested appreciation months so that we might spread the gratitude out amongst those who are also deserving of their own “Appreciation Month.”
- January – Christian Men’s Appreciation….January 27th is Baptist Men’s Day at Poplar Springs. – February – Love Acknowledgement Month….Tell people and God you love them. Better yet – show them! – March – Counselor, Friend, Listener Recognition….It’s been a long cold winter and approachable people are indispensable. – April – Jesus Appreciation (the best Easters are in April). If you need to know why Jesus deserves a month, talk to your fellow Christians. This is called, “Sharing your testimony.” – May – Mothers, babies, church members (living here and in Heaven) and Southern Cuisine Appreciation and a celebration of sacrificial service….May 12th – Mother’s Day/Baby Dedication, May 26th – Memorial Day (PSBC, USA). – June – Fathers are deserving of a month too, as well as graduates, youth, children, and aren’t you glad summer is here? June 2nd – Graduate Sunday. June 16th – Father’s Day. June 10-14th – Camp HoriSon, and Caswell??? – July – Vacation Appreciation Month and celebrate freedom. August – Nominating Committee (and folks who said yes to the Nominating Committee), deacons, Finance Committee, and Church Treasurer Appreciation. – September – Football and Academic Institutions Appreciation. – October – Church Staff Appreciation. Make sure you thank those whose work is not as visible as the Pastor (remember…at Poplar Springs, thanking the Pastor is superfluous). Also thank volunteer newsletter editor, Sharon Fisher, who is uncomfortable as she types these words that her Pastor/friend, Andy Oliver, is insisting that she print. – November – Christian Women’s Appreciation and (fill in the blank) Gratitude Month. November 11, 2018 – Baptist Women’s Sunday. And November contains Thanksgiving Day. – December – Gift Appreciation Month. The greatest gift? God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
I am sure you can think of other monthly appreciations. Let me encourage you to be excessive and expressive in your giving of thanks.
Your thankful Pastor,
Andy O. (704) 300-0062
